FAQ

Q. Are all NBC News programs online?
A. While the majority of the database is online, some programs, including DATELINE NBC, are not.

Q. What should I do if I can't find the footage I need?
A. Our site permits one to search using a basic search or advanced search. Please refer to Search Tips below. If you're still unable to locate the footage you need, contact us: 212.664.3797 or email.

Q. Can I search the site without registering?
A. You may search the site without registering. However, to create a Clipbin and add clips to your Cart, you will be prompted to register.

Q. How do I purchase a printed transcript of an NBC News program?
A. To purchase a printed transcript from 1990 forward, contact www.burrellesluce.com.

Q. What internet browsers are suggested for this site?
A. NBCNewsArchives.com is compatible with all browsers.

ORDERING

Q. Once I've searched the site and identified the footage I need, how do I place an order?
A. You may submit your order by email or through your "Cart" on the site. If you submit the order by email, you must include the following information: Media ID, Title, Hit Time. You may email your order to: footage@nbc.com or fax: 212.703.8558.
 In addition, please include the following information:
  * Description of your project including working title and specific episode/number
  * Licensee name and address
  * Editing schedule
  * Screening format preferred: VHS, Betacam
  * Master format preferred: BetaSP or DigiBeta
  * Rights required (See Below: What is the license fee?)
  * Shipping address including name, email and phone number
  * Payment information including name, address, email and phone number
If you are a registered user, we recommend you use the Cart functionality on the site to order so the above information is automatically sent to NBC News Archives once your order is submitted.

Q. How Do I Save My Mark In and Out Times?
A. When marking in and out time codes, be sure to hit "Save" at the bottom of the screen (scroll down). Selects must be saved prior to adding to a Cart or Clipbin.

Q. How do I place a master order?
A. Please email or fax your master order to your assigned researcher. Include the Media ID, exact in and out time code (do not include frames, do not include pad) and precise shot description for each clip. Please indicate the format preferred for your master tape.

Q. How soon after I place an order can I expect delivery?
A. Delivery depends upon the amount of footage ordered. Please advise your delivery deadline.

Q. Can I screen footage at the NBC offices?
A. You may screen film and tape at our offices, 30 Rockefeller Plaza, New York City. Screening should be scheduled with your researcher several days in advance. The researcher will advise screening fees.

Q. If I cannot come into the NY office, can I view the footage prior to placing an order?
A. We'll provide a burn-in time-coded screening cassette with your footage selections on VHS or Betacam. Please call the Archives if your project deadline does not permit time for a screening tape.

Q. Does the client submit a footage report? Is the client billed for the amount of footage reported?
A. The licensing fee is based on the amount of master footage ordered and is non-refundable. We may request written confirmation of footage used.

Q. Do you accept credit cards for payment?
A. Credit cards are the preferred method of payment. We accept MasterCard and Visa.

LICENSING

Q. What is the license fee?
A. The license fee depends on:
* Rights required -TV (please distinguish between standard TV, Cable TV, Pay Cable TV), Theatrical, Corporate Video, Education, etc. Please be specific
* Territory -where the footage will be used: US, Worldwide, Specific Country, Corporate Video, etc.
* Amount of footage ordered
* Duration of the license period (one year, three years)
* If the footage is exclusive, there is an additional fee

Q. Is all the footage available for licensing?
A. There is some 3rd party material (still photos, feature film or TV clips, entertainment or professional sports, for example) that is not available for licensing. We review all footage requests and advise if your request contains footage not available for licensing.

Q. Does NBC license footage that is narrated by the reporter or the reporter is on-camera?
A. NBC licenses reporter footage on a case-by-case basis. NBC requires a detailed description of the project and script pages showing the context in which the footage will be used. We'll work with you to obtain clearances. An additional fee is charged for reporter footage.

Q. Is DATELINE NBC footage available for licensing?
A. DATELINE NBC is handled on a case-by-case basis. For DATELINE NBC requests, a detailed description of the project and script is required. An additional fee is charged for DATELINE NBC.

Q. How do I license NBC Radio material?
A. The NBC Radio collection is housed at the Library of Congress, (LOC). Please search the Library of Congress site www.loc.gov/rr/record/recnbc.html for the specific program you wish to license. Once you have selected your radio recording, email your request to footage@nbc.com along with a printout of the LOC story card and ID number. We will contact the LOC to complete your order. All orders for radio recordings are non-refundable (duplication and licensing fee) before the tape (or disc) is released. Please be advised, requests for radio material may take several weeks to process.

Q. How may I license clips from entertainment programs?
A. NBC Studios Clip Licensing handles NBC Studios, some NBC Universal Television and BRAVO clips. Please fax your request to: 818.866.2574. The fax should be on letterhead and include a description of your program along with the term, territory, media and number of runs you will need. Please include as much information as possible about the NBC Entertainment program requested including title, airdate, episode name and number. You may contact NBC Studios Clip Licensing by phone 818.777.5147.

Q. How may I license Universal clips?
A. For NBC Universal, Universal Television Shows and Universal Feature Film clips: www.universalclips.com

Q. How may I license NBC Olympic footage?
A. All requests for Olympic footage are considered on a case-by-case basis. Please email your request to: glenn.morris@nbcuni.com. Please include complete details including the event, the date and location of the event and the name of the athlete. In addition, please include a detailed description of your production and where it will be distributed (worldwide TV, cable, etc.). NBC Olympics does not provide footage to the consumer.
